First Date
A Musical Comedy | Music and lyrics by Alan Zachary & Michael Weiner | Book by Austin Winsberg | Orchestrations by August Eriksmoen | Vocal & Incidental Music Arrangements by Dominick Amendum
When blind-date newbie Aaron is set up with serial-dater Casey, a casual drink at a busy restaurant turns into a hilarious high-stakes dinner.
While the two try to get to know each other, their inner critics take on a life of their own, bringing forth supportive best friends, demanding exes, and protective parents to sing and dance them through ice-breakers, appetisers, and potential conversational land mines.
As the date unfolds in true romantic comedy form, will Aaron and Casey get together? Or will it all fall apart before the food even arrives?
So whether you’re lucky or unlucky in love, join us for First Date, a musical comedy filled with bailout calls, sexy exes, awkward conversations and a good… heart.

Director’s note
I first saw First Date on Broadway in 2013, and instantly thought that it was a show entirely suited to MacMS. With a smaller cast and singular set, some awesome chorus numbers and a lot of fun costume changes, I had begun writing my pitch before I even left the theatre.
Fast forward to five years later: the rights finally became available and pitching opened for MacMS’s 2018 O-Week Show. It took a gentle nudge to remind me that the show existed, and then I got excited.
First Date is a fun and silly show, one that has been called ‘madcap fun’, and ‘a Greek chorus of emotional baggage’, where ‘no dating cliché is left unturned’. Since I’m a big believer in the idea that MacMS shows, from pitching all the way to bump-out, should first and foremost be fun, I knew it would be a blast to rehearse.
My cast and crew have worked so hard to bring this show together and I feel incredibly lucky to have been able to work with such a talented, enthusiastic and hilarious group of people. Working with them has been a dream and I can’t wait to watch them take to the stage every night.
As for my production team - Ashley’s wonderful choreography always makes me laugh, Renae’s vocal direction has made the cast sound fantastic, and Aidan’s work with the band has made all the difference. My producer Maddie has been brilliant in every way; always on top of everything and ready to take on any job, her work has made it so much easier for me. I don’t have enough words to say how much I appreciate each and every person who gave their time to this show.
So to summarise: thank you.
With all that said, get ready, get seated, and I hope you enjoy the show.
