Director’s note

Twelve weeks ago this musical didn’t exist.

There was no plot, no characters, no music and no script. It wasn’t even at the initial idea stage.

Twelve weeks ago, my production team and I were preparing to put an entirely different musical on the Lighthouse Theatre stage. Then rights fell through, leaving a hole in the MacMS calendar.

I was devastated. I had been so excited at the prospect of directing my first full-length show, and then suddenly the chance was gone.

In a moment of crazy optimism, I came up with an idea. Rather than putting together a cabaret to cover the spot, why not write an entirely new jukebox musical instead? Luckily, when I suggested the idea to my producer the answer wasn't That's a ridiculous idea' but instead 'Let's do it. Thus Jukebox - The Musical was born.

I wanted to put on a fun show, something that would bring in new members, make use of my favourite genres of music, and give as many people as possible a chance to strut their stuff.

Putting together a new musical in such a short time frame has been a challenge, but now this crazy idea is an actual thing on an actual stage with an actual band. There's real, live singing and dancing, a brilliant cast, an awesome set, an amazing crew, and the best producer anyone could ever ask for.

This is still blowing my mind.
